I’m a soccer player – well I used to be back in the day. I can’t run as fast as I used to, or for as long, and I’m not and skilled as I once was. I have some photos of my from my soccer days but sadly no video. The photos don’t show how fast I could run, how skilled I was at defending, or how much energy I had when the game was on the line – I wish I had a video record of me playing soccer.

Now that I am a video professional I enjoy documenting all sorts of events, especially sporting events. Athletes sure appreciate seeing themselves on video in the moment but I tell you the true value of sports video is when an athlete gets a bit older and wants to take a look back at when they were in their prime.

Video camera: Sony HVR-Z7U and Sony HVR-Z5U.

This video demonstrates the performance of Sony’s Exmor CMOS sensors in a fast motion environment. Note the lack of skew, a reported limitation of CMOS sensors due to the scan method that can cause straight lines to “bend” if the motion is too fast. As you can see the Z7 and Z5 CMOS sensors are able to keep-up with this fast motion, even when the skaters pass right infront of the camera, requiring a really fast pan.
